On behalf of the staff and clients of the Central Virginia Training Center, I would like to welcome you to our website. We appreciate your interest and hope that this initial contact may lead to an increased understanding of our facility operations and their role in maintaining the highest quality of life for the people who live here. Our staff touches the lives of these individuals daily through their constancy, devotion, earnestness of purpose and dedication to providing each individual with the services designated to meet his or her needs in a safe and secure environment. We strive to foster each individual's sense of personal worth and dignity . CVTC welcomes the active support of families, friends and legislators in helping us maximize our ability to serve. CVTC, the largest of the Commonwealth's five training centers, is home to more than 500 people who live on our 350 acre campus and receive services through five center based programs. Four centers are certified as Intermediate Care Facilities for the Mentally Retarded (ICF/MR) and one Center is certified as a Skilled Nursing Facility. In addition to residential programs and services, CVTC also provides a Senior Citizens day activity program, recreational services, medical services (including a 24-hour physician presence, pharmacy, radiology, laboratory, respiratory therapy and EMT's), dental services, rehabilitation and vocational services, educational services and an acute care hospital. All admissions to CVTC are time limited and voluntary. The first step in making an application is to contact the local Community Service Board (CSB) for a pre-screening report that includes a review of less restrictive alternatives. For admission to occur, there must be no less restrictive placement alternatives available and the facility must have both the space available and the necessary supports to meet the applicant's needs. CVTC's programs are aimed towards developing a range of appropriate residential alternatives for the individual. These may involve on-campus living, supported living or community care. In many cases, eventual community placement will be possible. The assigned Social Worker involves the individual, the family or authorized representative and the facility interdisciplinary team in all phases of the discharge planning. CVTC coordinates a centralized discharge program with the respective CSB to insure each client appropriate community placement, after care and follow-up services. If you have questions about the facility or would like to arrange a visit, please contact the office of our Acting Community Services Director (804-947-6220 or denise.forbes@cvtc.dmhmrsas.virginia.gov).
