Staff Development

The CVTC Staff Development and Training Department seeks to maintain a coordinated system of staff training, adult learning and professional development which provides employees the opportunity 

bullet

to prepare for and maintain the knowledge and skill requirements of their positions, 

bullet

to improve job performance, productivity and effectiveness,

bullet

and to assume greater or different professional responsibilities.

The department offers training and educational opportunities in the following areas:

bullet

Personal development through GED, management, professional and motivational workshops and courses.

bullet

Access to the College of Direct Support, an internet based college for direct support professionals.

bullet

Annual CORE training to meet Commonwealth, departmental and agency requirements.

bullet

Skill training in CPR, First Aid, physical management, lifting, and TOVAŽ, among others.

bullet

An on-site Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) program.

bullet

Medication Assistant Training for unlicensed personnel and Medication Assistant for community providers.

bullet

Continuing Medical Education (CME) through an affiliation with the University of Virginia School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education.

bullet

Opportunities for undergraduate/graduate students for supervised clinical placements in areas such as psychology, occupational therapy, physical therapy and social work. 

Training and development formats range from the traditional classroom setting to on-the-job training, computer assisted training, video conferencing and self study.  In support of these training programs, the department maintains an on-campus reference library (open 10 AM to 12:30 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday) with journals pertaining to mental retardation.
